In the past, when we talked about life simulation games, The Sims was often the first name that came to mind. Indeed, the series has long been the dominant force in this genre, with no real challengers emerging over the years.
However, as the genre became more stagnant at the top, its overall development seemed to slow down compared to other game types. That was until the end of 2024 when a game that had been showcased at Gamescom caught the industry’s attention.
From that moment on, this game—inZOI—was seen by players as the most promising successor to The Sims.
Before its release, inZOI had already garnered significant attention, soaring to the top of Steam’s wishlist rankings.
From my perspective, I was particularly curious about this game for two reasons. First, it was surprising to see Krafton—the studio behind PUBG—venturing into this genre, which felt like an unexpected shift. Second, its pricing was notably consumer-friendly, leaving a strong impression on me.
Upon launch, inZOI immediately skyrocketed to the top of Steam’s global best-sellers list, with over 80,000 concurrent players. Considering that the game is still in early access, this achievement is already remarkable.
After personally experiencing inZOI, I must say—this game is a true powerhouse in the life simulation genre. A category that had long seen slow progress has now taken a significant leap forward.

Thought It Was Just a Life Simulator, But Ended Up Playing as “God”
If I had to choose one word to describe my first impression of inZOI, it would be “freedom.”
Right from the start, the game presents two creation-focused features. Upon exploring them, I quickly realized just how detailed and expansive the customization options are. Players can freely design in-game properties, customize architectural styles, and even fine-tune interior decor to their heart’s content.
With its realistic graphics, inZOI gives off an almost professional software vibe. Beyond property design, character customization is also incredibly in-depth. The game refers to these virtual characters as “zoi.”
Unfortunately, during my playthrough, this feature was only available on iOS devices, so I wasn’t able to experience it firsthand. However, it’s likely that future updates will expand support to more platforms.
With such extensive customization options, it’s no surprise that inZOI includes a large UGC (User-Generated Content) community. This dedicated space allows players and creators to share their designs freely.
Even in its early stages, the community has already showcased some incredibly creative players. Some have used the game’s highly flexible character creation system to craft digital versions of real-life celebrities and characters from other games.
These designs have garnered significant likes and interactions within the player community, generating excitement. As more players join in the future, the UGC scene is bound to become even more vibrant.
After spending some time randomly customizing characters, I finally dove into inZOI‘s simulation gameplay—and the experience felt surprisingly different from what I expected.
Typically, life simulation games center around the player’s created character. However, in inZOI, players aren’t just controlling a single character—they’re also customizing the entire city.
This includes adjusting elements like city landscapes, the emotions of its residents, and even their friendliness toward each other. It was at this moment that I realized: this isn’t just The Sims—this is a god simulation.
Total Control Over Daily Life
One of the most important mechanics shaping a character’s development is the scheduling system. Players can freely plan their character’s daily activities, much like creating a school timetable.
Each location offers different functions—some provide physical training, others offer artistic inspiration, and there are many more options to explore.
Beyond scheduling, characters in the game also have a preference system. Players can manually select their zoi’s likes and dislikes. When a preferred activity is chosen, the zoi will occasionally develop the urge to engage in that activity, generating a time-limited goal for the player to fulfill.
Completing these tasks strengthens the zoi’s personality while also earning in-game tokens that can be used to purchase items. As characters graduate from school, their preferences will influence their future life goals. Choosing a certain career or ambition will require matching interests to achieve success.
Exploring the City—Freedom with a Few Hiccups
At its core, inZOI still embraces the essence of life simulation, allowing players to socialize, roam the city, and explore its hidden corners.
The social interactions are surprisingly rich—beyond simple conversations, players can take selfies with NPCs, perform interactive gestures, and engage in various social activities. Conversations offer a wide range of topics, and through interactions, players can gradually discover what subjects an NPC enjoys discussing the most.
However, when it comes to city exploration, my experience was slightly less satisfying. The main issue lies in the lack of clear guidance. Although the game provides a map, it doesn’t clearly indicate the specific functions of different locations.
For example, after selecting an interest in playing musical instruments, I struggled to find a relevant location on the map. Eventually, I stumbled upon a public square where instruments were available for street performances—entirely by chance.
That said, this experience isn’t necessarily a downside. After all, as a newly arrived zoi settling into the city, wandering around to familiarize oneself with the surroundings feels quite realistic. It adds an element of immersion, making the city feel more alive and organic.
AI: The Perfect Match for Life Simulation Games
With AI technology rapidly advancing, the gaming industry is experiencing a surge in AI-driven innovations. Earlier this year, CES 2025 showcased Nvidia’s AI-powered gaming demonstrations, sparking widespread discussions. More recently, GDC 2025 featured numerous talks dedicated to AI’s role in gaming.
Many upcoming and existing titles have integrated AI, with some making it a core feature. Examples include Peacekeeper Elite, which recently announced integration with DeepSeek, and Whispers from the Star, the first AI-driven game from renowned developer Cai Haoyu’s new venture.
Given AI’s transformative impact on in-game communication, life simulation games—where NPC interactions play a crucial role—seem like the perfect fit for this technology.
inZOI capitalizes on this potential by incorporating Nvidia’s ACE technology to enhance NPC and zoi interactions with local AI processing on the GPU. Within the game’s settings menu, players can enable an experimental “Smart Zoi” feature.
This option allows users to determine how much AI-driven dialogue influences their zoi’s behavior and interactions. Additionally, players can adjust AI settings based on their device’s capabilities, ensuring a personalized and optimized experience.
AI-Driven Personalities: How inZOI Redefines Life Simulations
Through hands-on experience, it’s clear that inZOI‘s AI-powered feature is more than just text generation—it actively influences Zoi behavior.
Unlike traditional simulation games where characters strictly follow player-defined schedules, inZOI‘s AI system introduces dynamic decision-making. Characters may deviate from their planned routines, adding unpredictability and depth to gameplay. Each night, before sleeping, Zoi autonomously writes a diary entry and adjusts future schedules accordingly, making daily life feel far less repetitive.
A Fully Customizable AI Personality System
One of inZOI‘s most intriguing features is its high level of personalization. Players can define a Zoi’s personality by inputting descriptive text, similar to how AI-generated art uses keywords to shape outcomes. This input directly influences the character’s goals, behavior, and personality, allowing for truly unique in-game experiences.
However, inZOI’s AI integration is still experimental and has some limitations. The feature requires significant hardware power, with an RTX 3060 GPU being the minimum recommended specification. Additionally, due to the computational demands of real-time AI processing, the system struggles at high game speeds—above 5x speed, AI-generated inner thoughts cease to appear.
Despite these challenges, inZOI stands as a pioneering example of AI implementation in gaming. Even without enabling this feature, players can still enjoy a rich simulation experience. As one of the first game studios to embrace AI, Krafton is positioning itself at the forefront of this technological shift in the gaming industry.
The Rise of Asian Game Studios: inZOI and a Changing Industry
For years, when Krafton was mentioned, the first game that came to mind was always PUBG. As a genre-defining battle royale, PUBG not only captivated millions of players but also influenced an entire generation of games. Even eight years after its release, it remains one of the most-played titles on Steam.
However, like many top-tier Korean developers, Krafton has refused to stay in its comfort zone, continuously exploring new genres. In recent years, several major Korean studios have followed a similar path. Neowiz introduced Lies of P, Shift Up released Stellar Blade, Nexon launched The First Berserker: Khazan, and now Krafton has entered the life simulation genre with inZOI.
This shift isn’t limited to Korea. Across Asia, game studios are venturing beyond their traditional strengths, delivering high-quality, innovative titles. China, in particular, has seen a surge in AAA single-player games, with titles like Black Myth: Wukong and Phantom Blade Zero generating massive hype. Meanwhile, major online games like Delta Force: Hawk Ops and Marvel Rivals are pushing production values to new heights.
If we rewind a few years, the industry consensus might have been that Japan dominated single-player games while China and Korea focused on online and mobile titles. But today, that assessment no longer holds true. While Western studios face stagnation and challenges, the Asian gaming scene is thriving, bringing fresh energy and innovation to the industry.
Even Ubisoft, after facing financial struggles, found a lifeline through Tencent’s investment, further highlighting Asia’s growing influence in the global gaming landscape.
Back to Krafton—inZOI is clearly positioned to be a major force in the life simulation genre. After experiencing the game firsthand, it’s evident that Krafton has grand ambitions. As the game’s director stated, inZOI is designed for at least 20 years of continuous updates to reach its full potential.
Now that inZOI has officially launched, it has already garnered thousands of reviews on Steam, maintaining a “Very Positive” rating. Players are expressing high expectations and hope for consistent updates, believing that the game has the foundation to dominate the genre. At this point, it may just be a matter of time before inZOI becomes the definitive life simulation game of the future.
